When a manufacturer brings out a new range of graphics cards, instead of designing ten different variations. They will make one super powerful graphics card and then they'll strip it down to suite different prize ranges.

Most of all these features can be activated by a flick of a switch. To tell you the truth it's easier than overclocking. All it takes is the know how to do it

Flashing the Bios as it's called is what the manufacturer's use to set the values of the card. You will have access to:

Clock rates

Voltage settings

stream processors speeds

having access to these option can really improve the performance. for example, being able to alter the voltage which would allow you to give more energy to your card, allowing for higher overclocks!

And for the 8800 and above owners you now have the ability to overclock the stream processors. There is no other way to date that you can do this( it's something that I stumbled on by accident!)
